(5) Physical, Mental, Cognitive & Emotional Development
The LTD model recognizes the importance of physical, mental, cognitive & emotional aspects for each athlete & notes that they should be enhanced to ensure a holistic approach to athlete development.
While there is some mention of gender differences & psycho-social factors in the CS4L foundation documents (e.g., self-esteem, competence, connectedness), gaps in knowledge & practice exist. For example, more effort is needed to improve the experiences of girls & young women who experience early or late maturation, who have had early negative experiences with physical activity & sport, & to recognize & support sexual & gender diversity.
Improved education & practice are also needed to create environments that are safe & welcoming for all participants, not just those who comprise the majority.
