Interpersonal Factors

Interpersonal factors are considerations that arise between a person & those around them. Women & girls in sport & physical activity are influenced by many interpersonal psycho-social factors:

  • encouragement & provision of appropriate opportunities for participation (social support), from family members & peers (the “cool factor”)
  • positive feedback or commentary from family members, peers, teachers, physical activity leaders, sport coaches, spectators, society, etc.
  • the nature of interpersonal relationships (e.g., cooperative, competitive, respectful, power distribution) & group atmosphere (the dynamics between participants, peers, colleagues)
  • social influence exerted by teachers, leaders & coaches during activities & talent identification processes (e.g., during classes, practices, games, assessments, etc.)
  • the presence (or absence) of active role models, both female & male
