Participation Snapshot
- In children & youth, only 4% of girls achieved the recommended levels of daily physical activity versus 9% of boys.
- Boys aged 5 to 19 took about 1,300 more daily steps than girls.
- Only 70% of girls participated regularly in sport during the previous 12 months, compared to 81% of boys.
- Fewer girls (27%) than boys (35%) participated in sport four or more times a week.
- In adults, only 19% of Canadian women participated in sport, compared to 35% of men.
- Females comprised only 39% of registered competitors & 38% of recreational members with summer sport National Sport Organizations.
- Women & girls from diverse racial backgrounds are the most underrepresented in the Canadian sport & recreation system.
- Women in all income groups report 5% to 10% lower levels of physical leisure-time activity than men, & the gap between high- & low-income women is greater than it is for men.
