Recommendation #1 – Actions
In the interest of developing, promoting & enforcing effective policies to ensure gender equity in the Canadian sport & physical activity system:
- Women & girls should be consulted in the development of new, effective policy.
- Gender equity policies should be reviewed/developed regularly & integrated into practice at the national, provincial/territorial, & community levels. Creating a gender equity policy is not the end, but the beginning — there must be implementation.
- Comprehensive family care policies that address child & elder care should be implemented for athletes, coaches, officials, & other leaders to increase support during training, competition, & professional development.
- Policies supporting equitable access & investment for women & girls with respect to financial resources, programs, facilities, equipment, quality coaching, leadership opportunities, & media coverage should be developed.
- Harassment & anti-discrimination policies addressing one’s actual or perceived sex, gender identity &/or gender expression, sexual orientation; socio-economic status; disability, language, race, culture, faith, etc.; hiring procedures; & employment equity should be reviewed/developed regularly & implemented.
- Existing policy barriers should be identified & eliminated.
- Facility allocation policies that are based on historical use or precedence often disadvantage women & girls, & must be changed.
- Uniform guidelines & policies that require suggestive attire or fail to provide reasonable choices for female athletes & participants must be addressed.
- National, provincial/territorial & community policies addressing poverty reduction, education, health care, public transportation & childcare should be renewed/developed & implemented. These policies impact the Canadian sport & physical activity system, & can enhance or restrict women’s & girls’ participation & leadership.
