Motivation

Goals are more readily achieved when motivation is high. When talking about motivation, there are generally two sources: intrinsic motivation, which comes from within, or extrinsic motivation, which is driven by external forces. Too much focus on extrinsic motivation, such as winning, can lead to girls withdrawing from sport or physical activity. Focusing more on intrinsic factors such as fitness, fun & skill improvement, makes a girl more likely to stay involved in sport.

As with goals, there is a myriad of things that motivate girls. Where possible, identifying these things can be helpful. Know too that motivation can fluctuate. Reminding girls of their goals can help to mitigate waning motivation, but watch also for signs of disengagement. Should a setback be the source of the problem, wins with smaller goals like improving sleeping habits or cleaner eating can help a girl regain her momentum.
