Other Considerations

It’s not enough to identify a goal that one wants to work toward. A goal is like a destination, but travelling between two points involves planning the route to take. As such, goal setting must involve outlining potential strategies to implement along the way. The more creative & prolific a person can be when identifying ways to attain a goal, the more paths that person has as options.

Beware the tendency or desire to compare oneself to someone else. Everyone is different with different abilities, different potential & different paths. It is more important to compare yourself to yourself before you did the work. This is not only a more apt comparison, but puts the emphasis on the person who is in control of improvement. If you want it badly enough, you have to be the one to make it happen. Effort is integral & equally important as the attainment of a goal.

She Belongs” suggests reframing goal setting as risk taking. This can help your participants to redefine risk as a means of taking control of their development as an athlete, a necessary step to becoming successful at something. This kind of language can also be empowering & take away from any feelings of vulnerability that may arise from opening oneself up to adversity & failure.
