Active Start

The Active Start stage takes place in children from birth to about 6 years of age.

The focus should be on developing locomotor, object manipulation & balance skills on land, water, ice/snow & in the air in a variety of movements.

Children should be engaged in both adult-led, structured play & free, unstructured play. Kids should also have opportunities for play in the natural environment.

Play should include activities that develop executive function: working memory, cognitive flexibility, & building self control.

In the interest of building resiliency & confidence, children should be provided with a series of challenges with both successes & failures. They also need chances to test their limits & explore risks in a safe environment.
