Addressing & Preventing Disengagement

3 steps you can take to try & prevent disengagement:

1) Be proactive. Assure the participant of open lines of communication. Check in casually on a regular basis. Make “shout-outs” part of your team routine, not just for successes but also acknowledge effort, resilience, etc.

2) Be understanding. When a participant has an issue & needs or wants to talk, you can eliminate the fear that is often associated with vulnerability by being understanding. Understand that your participants are in the process of developing coping mechanisms & require your guidance.

3) Be supportive. If a participant is going through a difficult time & cannot participate, encourage them to attend practice because you “need them” as they may still benefit from being present but also from being around friends & you. Provide alternative roles for the participant, including score keeping, assisting coaches, cheering, recording stats, etc. Understand that, because you are a neutral figure, your participant may benefit from your support in talking to a parent/guardian about their wellbeing.
